An official event such as the presidential inauguration asks the best in terms of decorum and sobriety of those present, with important figures donning their most elegant clothing for the occasion – except Senator John Fetterman.
The 55-year-old former governor of Pennsylvania and member of the Democratic Party arrived at the property with nothing but his signature black hoodgray gym shorts and sneakers, with what many interpreted as one deliberate show of disrespect.
- Senator Fetterman attended Trump’s inauguration wearing his signature hoodie and gym shorts.
- Fetterman’s casual attire sparked criticism from viewers who felt it was disrespectful.
- Supporters praised Fetterman’s down-to-earth style and authenticity.
“Fetterman, don’t you have any respect for the importance of the office of president to at least wear pants, a shirt and a jacket, instead of dressing like you just finished working out at the gym!?” wrote one viewer.
Interestingly, the senator has remained fairly neutral on Trump, stating in a 2024 interview that he was not “against him” and that he recognized that the president-elect had “undeniable political talent.”

Far from being an intentional jab at the president or other attendees, it’s Fetterman’s choice clothing matches his habit of ignoring formal wear in favor of more comfortable options, regardless of the nature of the events he attends.
His down-to-earth demeanor, coupled with his 6-foot-2 frame, endeared him to his supporters, who see Fetterman’s refusal to wear formal attire unless absolutely necessary as a boost to his image.

Despite being a Democrat, the senator has become one of the more Trump-friendly figures in the party as he vocally opposed Harris’ campaign rhetoric surrounding her opponent and his supporters.
