Viewers of the inauguration couldn’t help but notice the striking appearance the First Lady attracted to her husband’ssecond inauguration.
Adam Lippes’ deep blue ensemble, paired with an equally dark hat by Eric Javits, drew one strong reaction– but not exactly what she was hoping for.
‘Who wore it better? Melania Trump or Michael Jackson?” one viewer wrote, prompting a barrage of funny comparisons about figures from across pop culture.

The fashion designer has distinguished himself from others in the field by drawing inspiration from “art, architecture and interiors, creating a new look for sophisticated American style.”
Melania’s outfit in particular appears to be a dark blue version of a $4,490 custom “Laurence” coat, listed in Lippes’ website only in amethyst shade and with only two buttons on the single-breasted closure.

Despite Lippes’ work having “timeless sophistication,” it did not seem to evoke thoughts of elegance and sobriety in the audience, who instead felt reminded of figures such as McDonald’s “Hamburglar” and other cartoon characters.
“Why the heck does Melania Trump look like the Hamburglar?” one user asked.
“These UFO sightings are getting out of hand. First Dior Bags, and now Melania’s hat!” another joked.
Both the President and First Lady opted for a more muted attire, instead opting for a more subdued yet elegant look

The ensemble is in stark contrast to the Ralph Lauren outfit she wore to Trump’s inauguration in 2017: an elegant powder blue cashmere dress with a stand-up collar, adorned with matching gloves in the same color.
Over the past four years, people may have forgotten about Melania’s antics, as the First Lady is no stranger to making bold statements with her outfits, including her infamous 2018 visit to a migrant detention center wearing a jacket that read: ‘I really don’t care, do you?’
