Sustainable water transport: lecture on ecological transport

Sandith Thandasherry’s lecture on ecological transport describes the benefits of vehicles powered by solar energy. The speaker is the CEO of NavAlt Solar and Electric Boats. In his short keynote, he explains in detail how his company developed a solution to the largely unsustainable implications of diesel-powered water transport.

A typical ferry in Kerala involves pollution and high operating costs that exceed revenues. Since water transport is essential for countries like India, officials launched a challenge calling for the design of a ferry that has a capacity to carry 75 passengers at a time, with 22 trips of 2.5 kilometers per day and an operational time frame between 7 a.m. o’clock. and 7 p.m.

NavAlt Solar and Electric Boats is looking for a sustainable way of transport. While many thought it was impossible, Sandith Thandasherry’s company has prevailed. The second half of the lecture on ecological transport briefly explains the steps the company has taken to design the sustainable boat. Firstly, lighter materials have been used for the vehicle’s body and the weight has been halved. Secondly, drag was reduced by a third by creating a more optimal underwater shape. Finally, a more efficient drivetrain was implemented.

The ferry was tested in November 2016 and has officially been sailing for 11 months from today. During his lecture on ecological transport, Sandith Thandasherry proudly reveals that his company’s design successfully carried 5,000 passengers on board, traveled 22,000 kilometers and saved 35,000 liters of diesel, which translates into 94 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The payback period is set at three years and NavAlt Solar and Electric Boats hopes to address and optimize the design of larger vessels in the future.
